fødevareBanken is a non-profit, volunteer based association, founded in 2008. Since 2009 the association has received surplus food from food producers, farmers, wholesalers and supermarkets and distributed it to charities and organizations providing help, care and relief for vulnerable people in Denmark – i.e. homeless people, families affected by domestic abuse, people suffering from mental disabilities and substance abusers.

fødevareBanken fights two challenges in society: food waste and food poverty. On one hand every day large amounts of edible food are wasted in the food industry, having a negative impact on the environment. On the other hand, a larger group of vulnerable people suffer from hunger and malnutrition.

fødevareBanken currently benefits from a team of approximately 150 volunteers nationally. Most of the volunteers contribute to the food distribution but they also assist the paid staff with administrative tasks. Volunteers delivers surplus food corresponding to over 5000 meals per day. The paid staff consists of 11 employees ensuring operational functions as well as management, fundraising, communication and administrative tasks.

fødevareBanken distributes food 6 days a week all year round. The volunteers daily operate 3 to 4 routes with 4 to 5 visits to charities per route. The distribution takes around 4 to 5 hours and is carried out by a volunteer driver and 1-2 assistants using fødevareBanken’s refrigerated vehicles. Today fødevareBanken owns 6 refrigerated vehicles and 1 rented van.
